Protective Styling

Maybe yesterday's crazy humidity did me in but I'm all about protective styling right now. I have my brother's graduation in two weeks and I'm trying to decide how I want to wear my hair. I am loving these twists. #twostrandtwists #protectivestyling #summerhair

Protective Styling Challenge

It's Fall! I feel like fall came out of nowhere, despite the signs of being here for weeks. Either way, it is a much welcomed break from the heat and humidity of summer.

As we usher in the cooler temps, we are also ushering in drier air which can be devastating to us naturals. Don't fret! There are ways to keep the moisture and obtain some length this season through protective styling.

I haven't done a protective styling challenge on the site so I figured now would be a great time to do so. What is the challenge about, you ask?

For 30 days, we will do our best to wear our hair in a protective style while nurturing it and providing some much needed TLC. You are free to do mini-twists, braids, cornrows, etc. There are no limits to styling but it must be a low manipulation/protected style.

Ready? Set? Go!

Coming Back!

Hey guys! I'm finally back at work and back to blogging this week. I truly enjoyed my first week of married life and now I'm readjusting to married life while working.

I created a couple of videos during last week that I am editing and should have up by the end of the week. In the meantime, check out this super cute and quick style by KayKay10001. This is a great summer protective style that you can do to twists. It only takes a few minutes and couple of bobby pins.

Heat Protective Style

Hey guys! My apologies for my absence lately. Life has been pretty busy for me and I just haven't had time to blog. Now that that's out of the way...

If you live on the East Coast, you've been affected by the heatwave and storms that are sweeping our area. The metro Atlanta has had temps in the low 100s the past few days and let me tell you, it is no joke. My hair was definitely the butt of a joke with all the frizz so I gave myself a bentonite clay treatment and deep condition, and put in some mini twists. They aren't as tiny as I would like but they are definitely helping to keep me cool.

Minitwists - Take 1

For my first attempt at a protective style this season, I decided to give twists a try. I checked out a couple of YouTube videos to see how others were doing them, what steps they were using, etc. Naptural85 has a pretty good tutorial as well as KinkyKurlyQueen, although I didn't do mine as tiny as she did.

I shampooed and conditioned my hair with my Shea Moisture products. I followed my normal process of moisturizing my edges with Jamaican Black Castor Oil and then sectioned my hair into smaller sections to apply Kinky Curl Knot Today Leave-In for detangling. Next, I braided my hair into 6 large braids to stretch it and dry overnight. The next day, I took the braids down and separated my hair out. I fingerparted my hair because I didn't want it to look too "scalpy". With each section I parted, I slightly dampened it with water and applied a little SM Curl Milk for twisting. I split each of the parts in half and did two twists. My twists at the crown of my hair a little larger since I wanted to make sure my hair was fuller there.

After a couple of hours of twisting (I took a couple of breaks), I had a head full of mini-twists. I sealed my ends with a little vatika oil and wrap my hair each night with a satin scarf or bonnet. I am loving these twists. It's great to just get up, shake my hair and go each morning. In terms of daily maintenance, I don't have to do very much. I may lightly mist it with water and a little oil or rub flaxseed gel through them.

I have received tons of compliments on my hair. I can't wait to play around with some of the styling. And for those of you who work in a corporate environment, mini-twists are a great style to wear. You can pin them back, up to the side for a bit of sassiness.

Tutorial: Two Flat Twists

Check out MsDanti1's easy protective tutorial. This is a great style for those "in-between" wash days when you don't feel like doing much to your hair. Jazz it up with a cute accessory and eye-popping makeup.
