Q & A with Monique
Question
Hi Monique. I've been transitioning for about 5 months now and I have about 5 inches of new growth. I don't know if this is a common thing for transitioners but my hair seems to tangle easily these days. I make sure I keep it combed and keep my hands out of it but after washing it, detangling is such a chore. Any advice?

My Response
Hi Tangled and Tired. I know first-hand how frustrating it can be to detangle a head of hair that is has two different textures. Relaxed hair and natural hair don't work very well together on the same head as you've recently learned but that doesn't mean you can't find a work around. Much like natural hair, transitioning hair must be treated gently and with care. Might I suggest using a cream-based conditioner like Herbal Essence's Hello Hydration. It provides great "slip" so detangling will be a breeze. If you are using heat, try styling your hair while wet. Twists, bantu knots, air drying all allow your hair's natural curl pattern to not be interrupted and result in tangles. Never ever detangle your hair while its dry or it may result in breakage. I hope this helps!
